The Children’s Sunday School guides children, according to their level of understanding, into learning the message of the Bible. Tne teacher gave this brief description of their class:
“We have a small, vibrant class. We learn interesting stories from the Bible about
God’s love and how he wants us to live our lives.”
YOUTH
Youth Division -- Teachers - Chris Varner; Pete Perry; Glenn Joyner
Location: Top floor of older wing of the Educational Building, Rooms 302
The curriculum used is from Smyth and Helwys and lends itself to discussion of the principles of Christian living as recorded in the Bible.
Other opportunities for Youth come under the Youth Ministry and include service projects, mission trips,
special Bible studies, Bible Drill, drama, music, retreats and recreational outings.
COLLEGE AND POST HIGH SCHOOL YOUNG ADULTS
Teachers: Frank and Lynne Cox
Location: Second Floor
Ages: College Age
A time of fellowship and light snack followed by class each week. The curriculum is varied and class discussion is encouraged. The College Ministry Team also seeks to meet the varied needs of students with studies and activities during the week.
ADULTS
New Directions Class
Ages: Young Adults
Location of Class: Top floor of the educational wing, Room 304
Teachers: Burney Carraway and Lester Zeager
This is a class for newly married couples, young singles, and young adult couples. There are rotating
teachers, each with their own “style” and the curriculum is Smyth and Helwys studies of the Bible. Quarterly
socials are held and close contact and support is maintained outside of the classroom environment for all
members of the class.
Other than the Sunday morning Bible study time, which begins with a fellowship time that includes good
food and conversation, there are special group studies on topics of special interest to this age group. These
studies may deal with parenting, developing a stronger prayer life or having a closer relationship in your
marriage.
Couples Life and Work Class
Ages: 30s to 50
Location of Class: Top floor of educational wing, Room 312
Teachers: Linda Asbell, Chris Harker, Ruth Riddle
This class has lessons that are Biblically focused with emphasis on daily application.
The method of teaching is in-depth discussion. Class socials are quarterly. Many of the members of this
class are teachers and leaders in other areas of Sunday School.
Irby Jackson Class
Ages: 35-60
Location: First floor of educational building, Room 111
Teachers: Tom Chambliss, Earl Moore, Tom Wilbourne, Jim Harris
Teachers work on rotational basis, and use a traditional Baptist curriculum. The style of teaching is lecture,
with some discussion. The class lends itself to good fellowship on Sunday morning and has one big social
event each year at Valentine. Age of class members is rather flexible.
New Men’s Class
Ages: Men of all ages
Location: (Across from the library)-Second floor of educational wing, Room 203
Teacher: Cecil Mizelle.
Fellowship Class
Ages: 50+
Location: Parlor, located near front entrance of educational wing
Teacher: Doris Cox
This class is coed and has an atmosphere that encourages lively discussions of the lesson materials, which
are Bible studies from Smyth and Helwys. The class is nurturing and enjoys several social gatherings each
year. Having a sense of humor is a prerequisite for joining this group, which is largely made up of retired
folks who are seeking to grow in their faith.
Lena Jackson Class
Ages: 35-60
Location: Lower floor of ducateional wing, Room 115
Teachers: Sandra Tawake, Pat Dunn, Carolyn Moore
The Lena Jackson class is a group of energetic, enthusiastic women, who are involved in community
missions. The varied religious backgrounds enhances the Bible study discussions. There are good times of
fellowship several times each year.
Mittie Smith Class
Ages: 50-65
Location: Second floor of educational wing, Room 213
Teacher: Carrie Joyner, Martha Windham, Clell Moore
This class uses the Smyth and Helwys Formations series as the approach to studying the Bible. They are
strongly involved in grief ministry, preparing meals for church members who have deaths in their immediate
family. They also support their members when they are ill by sending cards, visiting and taking them meals.
Special socials are held at Christmas and in May.
Annie Higgs Class
Ages: 60+ ( Prefer to say that age is not a factor)
Location: Second floor of the older Educational wing, Room 211
Teachers: Nell Garner and Marian McGlohon
This is a close knit group of twelve active ladies who love the Lord and search the Bible for new challenges
and inspiration. They keep in touch with inactive members and
make every effort to minister to the needs of their class members, whatever they may be.
They have class meetings and an anual Christmas party.
Their teachers say that discussions can become a bit opionated from time to time, but their goal is to make
the scripture come alive!
Men’s Class
Ages: 65+
Location: Room 215, which is the room adjacent to the church offices.
Teachers: Bud Joyner
This class uses the Uniform series from Smyth and Helwys. The teaching method is lecture/discussion.
This class helps to meet the needs of church members and does a lot of visitation.
Carrie Wilson Class
Ages: 65+
Teachers: Nell Garner
Location: Second Floor of Older Educational wing, Room 208
The Carrie Wilson class is a special caring and loving class of ladies age 65 and up. Their study comes from
the Smyth and Helwys International series. Teachers use the lecture and discussion method. Daytime
quarterly class meetings are held and also a daytime Christmas party.
